U.S. Route 72: Tuscumbia to Florence – Alabama

Take a short but striking ride through the Muscle Shoals region as we follow U.S. Route 72 east from Tuscumbia to Florence, Alabama. This six-mile journey may be brief, but it traverses some of the most historically and musically significant real estate in the American South, connecting the Shoals cities across the broad sweep of the Tennessee River.

We begin our drive in Tuscumbia, one of Alabama’s oldest towns and famously the birthplace of Helen Keller. Turning onto US-72 from the intersection with US-43, we head north out of downtown, quickly transitioning from the small-town charm of Tuscumbia’s historic district into the more urban environment of Sheffield. The route here is lined with local businesses and older neighborhoods that echo the region’s mid-20th-century growth. Though we pass through at speed, the cultural legacy lingers—just blocks away from our route sits Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, where legends like the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin laid down tracks that changed American music forever.

As we continue through Sheffield, we approach the heart of the Shoals—the O’Neal Bridge, a striking steel structure that carries US-72 across the wide Tennessee River. The view from the bridge is worth a moment of reflection. To the west, the towering smokestacks and hydro infrastructure of Wilson Dam hint at the region’s ties to the Tennessee Valley Authority and early 20th-century industrialization. To the east, the flow of the river curves toward Pickwick Lake, its calm surface often dotted with fishing boats and the occasional barge. The bridge itself connects not only two cities, but two halves of a regional identity rooted in water, power, and sound.

Once across the river, we find ourselves in Florence, the largest of the Quad Cities and home to the University of North Alabama. As we crest a gentle hill past the intersection with AL-20 (Coffee Road), signs of student life and civic vitality begin to appear—brick buildings, art galleries, and tree-lined streets that signal we’re entering the edge of downtown. Though our journey ends just as US-72 turns east onto Dr. Hicks Boulevard, the city invites further exploration. A turn west would take you deeper into Florence’s historic core, where antebellum homes, boutique shops, and the campus of UNA unfold in a walkable grid shaped by the bluffs above the river.

For such a short drive, this stretch of US-72 offers a remarkable concentration of stories and scenery—bridging towns that have shaped American music, power infrastructure that fueled the modern South, and landscapes that still draw visitors today. As we leave the road behind, it’s hard not to feel the quiet resonance of the Shoals, where history and harmony still travel side by side.
