U.S. Route 61

U.S. Route 61 is a historic north–south United States highway that stretches approximately 1,400 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the city of Wyoming, Minnesota, just north of the Twin Cities. Often referred to as the “Blues Highway,” it follows a path steeped in American music history, paralleling the Mississippi River and linking several major cultural hubs across the South and Midwest.

The southern portion of US 61 begins in the vibrant city of New Orleans and passes through Baton Rouge and Natchez before continuing north through Mississippi. This segment closely follows the path of legendary blues musicians who migrated north, giving the route its iconic nickname. Travelers today can explore towns rich in Delta Blues heritage, such as Clarksdale and Tunica, which offer museums, juke joints, and festivals dedicated to preserving this uniquely American art form.

Continuing through Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, and into Minnesota, US 61 intersects key cities like Memphis, St. Louis, and Dubuque. In its northern stretches, the route becomes a scenic drive through rolling farmland and wooded hills. By the time it reaches its terminus in Minnesota, US 61 offers a dramatic contrast to its southern origins—trading bayous and cotton fields for lakes and pine forests. Though parts of its original alignment have been bypassed or replaced by Interstate highways (notably I-55 and I-35), U.S. Route 61 remains a compelling journey for road trippers and history buffs alike.
