U.S. Route 127

U.S. Route 127 is a north-south U.S. Highway that stretches from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the outskirts of Michigan’s capital, Lansing. Spanning over 750 miles, this route offers a scenic and diverse travel experience through six states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan being the most prominent. Originally commissioned in 1926, US 127 has seen several extensions and realignments, particularly in the latter half of the 20th century.

In Tennessee, the highway begins in Chattanooga and winds its way through the Cumberland Plateau, offering access to rural mountain communities and natural landmarks like Fall Creek Falls State Park. As it continues north into Kentucky, US 127 becomes a vital corridor for central parts of the state, including Danville and Frankfort, the state capital. Here, the route supports both regional traffic and tourism, especially during the annual 127 Yard Sale — the world’s longest yard sale — which spans hundreds of miles along the highway.

Crossing into Ohio and eventually Michigan, the highway transitions from Appalachian foothills to the flat farmlands and industrial cities of the Midwest. In Ohio, it intersects with key east-west highways and serves towns like Celina and Van Wert. In Michigan, US 127 functions as a limited-access freeway for a significant portion of its route, providing a major connection between Lansing, Jackson, and the Ohio border. The Michigan segment was once part of US 27 before it was renumbered in the early 2000s.
