Oklahoma Highway 51: Tulsa to Broken Arrow – Oklahoma

Take a quick but dynamic drive through the heart of Tulsa’s eastern corridor as we follow Oklahoma Highway 51 from Tulsa to Broken Arrow. This 7-mile stretch may be short, but it carries the pulse of one of Oklahoma’s busiest metro areas, tracing a path through neighborhoods, business centers, and the gateway to turnpike travel deeper into the state. What begins as a bustling freeway in the shadow of Tulsa’s skyline soon transforms into a high-speed conduit connecting the city to its growing suburbs and beyond.

We begin our journey on US-64 as it merges with OK-51 just east of Tulsa, near the sprawling interchange with US-169. Here, traffic weaves between multiple directions, with overhead signage pointing toward Owasso, Muskogee, and downtown Tulsa. This segment, often referred to locally as the Broken Arrow Expressway, is a vital artery for commuters. Sound walls and office parks line the corridor as we begin heading southeast, the skyline of downtown Tulsa fading into the rearview mirror. To the sides, mature trees and glimpses of residential rooftops frame the road, a reminder that we’re passing through the thick of suburbia.

As we enter Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s fourth-largest city, the landscape subtly shifts. Commercial development flourishes near exits like 81st and 101st Streets, with retail centers, restaurants, and office complexes dominating the view. It’s clear that this route does more than move traffic—it fuels economic life on the eastern edge of the metro. Highway 51 widens and flows smoothly, with well-kept overpasses and interchanges hinting at the state’s investment in infrastructure here. Neighborhoods tuck away behind the tree lines and access roads, while traffic signs remind us of the merging turnpikes ahead.

Just beyond Broken Arrow’s southern edge, we arrive at the major interchange connecting Highway 51 with the Creek and Muskogee Turnpikes—two toll roads that serve as gateways to the wider state and beyond. The interchange itself is a striking tangle of ramps and overpasses, one of the most prominent highway junctions in eastern Oklahoma. As we pass under this multi-level structure, OK-51 seamlessly transitions into the Muskogee Turnpike. It’s here that we end our video, leaving behind the urban bustle and entering the open stretches of Oklahoma’s southeastern corridor.

Though brief, this segment of Highway 51 offers a snapshot of modern Oklahoma life—where city and suburb collide, where commerce thrives along wide boulevards, and where highways serve not just as roads but as lifelines. Whether you’re commuting into Tulsa, heading home to Broken Arrow, or beginning a longer journey southward, this drive is a perfect introduction to the Sooner State’s evolving road network.
