Arkansas Highway 291: Prattsville to Tull

Travel with us as we drive nine quiet miles north through the heart of rural Grant County along Arkansas Highway 291, from the small town of Prattsville to the equally serene community of Tull. This lesser-traveled route showcases the tranquil beauty of south-central Arkansas—offering a peaceful escape for those looking to enjoy a stretch of country road without the hustle of traffic or the distraction of modern development.

We begin our journey in Prattsville, turning north onto Arkansas Highway 291 from the junction with U.S. Route 270. Prattsville itself is a modest town steeped in local tradition and surrounded by fertile farmland. Once we leave the town limits, the road immediately transitions into an open-air corridor flanked by flat pastures, patches of pine forest, and wide-open skies. It’s a quintessential Arkansas backroad—free from fast food signs and gas station clutter. Instead, it offers glimpses of aging barns, rolling hayfields, and the occasional slow-moving tractor.

As we continue north, the road gently curves and dips through stretches of wooded terrain. It’s the kind of route where you might spot a white-tailed deer crossing the pavement or a hawk gliding above the tree line. The quietude is striking; you may go several minutes without passing another vehicle. This isolation isn’t loneliness—it’s part of the charm. Arkansas 291 feels more like a passage through time than a connector between towns.

The road remains largely undisturbed by commercial development or heavy residential areas, maintaining its rural character all the way into Tull. Approaching town, the trees begin to thin and the landscape flattens out again. We reach the northern end of Highway 291 as it seamlessly transitions into Arkansas Highway 190—a road that runs north-south along the Saline River basin and connects Tull with other nearby communities like Shaw and Benton. This marks the end of our journey, but it also serves as a great jumping-off point for further exploration of Saline and Grant counties.

Whether you’re exploring by car, motorcycle, or even planning a cycling route, this short but scenic segment of AR-291 is a relaxing way to soak up Arkansas’s quieter side. It’s not flashy, but it’s full of the slow, steady rhythms that define so much of rural America.
