Heading north through the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas Highway 23 delivers one of the most scenic and satisfying drives in the Natural State. Starting in the small community of Forum, just beyond the boundary of Withrow Springs State Park, this 18-mile stretch offers a gorgeous ride that climbs and curves through the rugged hills of northwest Arkansas. Known regionally as part of the famed Pig Trail Scenic Byway, AR-23 gives travelers a quiet and winding route that’s as enjoyable behind the wheel as it is from the passenger seat.
As we begin our journey, we turn onto Highway 23 from AR-23W—an oddly named spur just north of Withrow Springs. Almost immediately, we pass the junction with AR-127, marking our departure from the Forum area and entry into wilder territory. From here, the highway threads its way through the McIlroy Madison County Wildlife Management Area, a protected zone known for its rich wildlife habitat and dense forest. This stretch is a paradise for nature lovers, particularly in the spring and fall when the forest canopy bursts into brilliant colors. While there aren’t many formal pull-offs here, the drive alone is its own reward—rolling hills, shaded turns, and the occasional glimpse of a valley below.
Farther north, we approach the junction with Arkansas Highway 12. This spot is a useful landmark, and from here the terrain starts to change again. We’re entering what locals often call the “wild south side” of Eureka Springs. Before we actually reach the city, however, there’s one more gem to note: the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for big cats and exotic animals rescued from neglect. The refuge is just off Highway 23 and offers visitors a chance to see lions, tigers, bears, and leopards in a spacious, humane setting—a surprising but very welcome sight in rural Arkansas.
The final leg of the drive winds through increasingly narrow and steep terrain as we descend into Eureka Springs. The road gets tighter here, lined with stone retaining walls, rock bluffs, and overhanging trees. This approach into Eureka Springs is one of the most memorable ways to arrive in town. Known for its steep hills, winding streets, and preserved Victorian architecture, Eureka Springs feels like stepping back in time. We end our route at the busy intersection with U.S. Highway 62—just a stone’s throw from downtown and its famous historic district.
