If you’re up for a scenic and truly memorable ride, Arkansas Highway 23 is one of those stretches that checks all the boxes—curvy mountain roads, charming small towns, and plenty to see along the way. We’ll take you along for a 12-mile adventure heading south from the Missouri state line, right down to the heart of Eureka Springs.
We kick off this journey up in Missouri, rolling south on Supplemental Route P from MO-86 near Eagle Rock. The border crossing itself is easy to miss—there’s just a simple sign as you enter Arkansas, but it’s where Route P officially transforms into Arkansas Highway 23. Immediately, you’ll notice the scenery shifting from Missouri farmland to the forested hills that define the Arkansas Ozarks. For about 4 miles, we wind south through thick woods and scattered homes, soaking in the laid-back vibe that makes this region a favorite for both road trippers and motorcycle riders.
Our first point of interest is Holiday Island, a lakeside community that’s popular for its golf courses, marina, and access to Table Rock Lake. If you’re in the mood to stretch your legs, the marina here is a good spot to take in the water views or even rent a boat. The highway bends west for a couple of miles, following the natural curves of the hills and offering occasional glimpses of the lake to your right. This stretch toward Arkansas Highway 187 is especially pretty in the spring and fall, when the surrounding woods put on a color show.
At the junction with AR-187, we turn south to stay on Highway 23. From here, it’s about 4.5 miles of classic Ozark curves as we descend toward Eureka Springs. As you approach Eureka Springs, keep an eye out for roadside overlooks where you can pull off and snap a few photos—the views are worth it. Eureka Springs itself is a highlight not to be missed. Known for its Victorian architecture, winding streets, and eclectic shops, this historic town is a destination in its own right. Highway 23 drops you right into the heart of town, ending at the busy intersection with U.S. Highway 62. Whether you’re in the mood for a bite to eat, a stroll through art galleries, or exploring the historic springs and bathhouses, Eureka Springs is the perfect place to end your drive (or start your next adventure).
Along the way, you’ll experience a little bit of everything—quiet lakeside stretches, forested hills, and one of Arkansas’s most beloved small towns. If you’re riding in the fall, expect dazzling colors. Spring brings wildflowers and cool, misty mornings. No matter the season, this short segment of Highway 23 is a great reminder of why the Ozarks are such a magnet for travelers.
