Just northeast of Mayflower, Arkansas, Clinton Road offers a quiet and scenic drive through a lesser-traveled slice of Faulkner County. In this video journey, we drive roughly 6 miles south along Clinton Road from the unincorporated community of Saltillo to just outside of Mayflower, ending at the junction with Arkansas Highway 89. While it may not be part of a numbered highway system, Clinton Road offers a tranquil detour through wooded lands, open countryside, and a brush with state-managed wildlife territory.
We begin our drive by turning south onto Clinton Road from Saltillo Road, a rural connector that runs north-south the community of Saltillo to U.S. Route 64. Saltillo itself is a quiet, lightly developed area near the Pulaski-Faulkner County line, with no services but plenty of rural charm. As we make our way south, we quickly find ourselves skirting the western edge of the Camp Robinson State Wildlife Management Area. Though we don’t delve deep into the refuge itself, the dense foliage and undisturbed surroundings hint at the vast preserve just beyond the trees.
About halfway through the drive, the tree canopy thickens, and the road dips into a lowland area that may hold standing water during heavy rains. This stretch feels especially remote and is home to numerous bird species and small game thanks to its proximity to Camp Robinson. For those interested in outdoor recreation, the wildlife management area offers hunting, hiking, and wildlife watching. Continuing south, Clinton Road gradually rises back out of the lowlands and transitions into more open pastureland and scattered rural homes. Traffic remains light throughout the drive—often nonexistent—which adds to the road’s appeal for those looking to enjoy a leisurely cruise or scenic backroad motorcycle ride. Our drive concludes at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 89, just east of Mayflower proper. From here, travelers can turn west into town or continue east along AR-89 toward Cabot.
While Clinton Road might not offer major landmarks or tourist attractions, it’s a pleasant example of the kind of quiet, forest-lined rural roads that crisscross this part of Arkansas. It’s a relaxing alternate route that gives drivers a taste of the state’s natural beauty without the traffic and noise of major highways.
