Traveling across the northern edge of the Arkansas Ozarks, U.S. Route 62 from Eureka Springs to Harrison offers a scenic and winding journey through one of the state’s most charming and visually captivating corridors. Stretching 32 miles, this section of the highway connects two notable towns while passing through quiet communities, lush valleys, and historic main streets. Whether you’re a weekend wanderer or just passing through, this drive delivers a rewarding mix of natural beauty, small-town Americana, and Ozark character.
We begin our eastward drive at the intersection of Arkansas Highway 23 and U.S. Highway 62 in the Victorian mountain town of Eureka Springs. Known for its winding streets, restored historic buildings, and hidden stairways, Eureka Springs is itself a destination—so before heading out, it’s worth spending a little time exploring the downtown historic district or catching a view from the Crescent Hotel. As we leave town, U.S. 62 snakes downhill through dense woods, tracing the ridges as it descends into the Kings River valley. This portion of the road is especially curvy, providing a fun drive for road enthusiasts and motorcyclists, with scenic pull-offs and rustic views that change with the season.
Soon, we roll into Pleasant Valley, a quiet area surrounded by rolling farmland and wooded hills. Just a few miles farther is Berryville, the seat of Carroll County and a major junction point for travelers in this part of the state. Here we take a brief break to fuel up before continuing. Berryville itself has a quaint downtown square and is home to the Carroll County Heritage Center, which provides a glimpse into the region’s past. We pass the intersection with Arkansas Highway 21 near the heart of town before continuing east toward Green Forest.
As we enter Green Forest, we encounter AR-103 south at the city limits, and shortly after, pass the junctions with AR-103 north and AR-311 in the center of town. This segment of US-62 offers a more relaxed pace, with signs of rural life—farms, silos, and local businesses—visible throughout the stretch. After Green Forest, the road straightens slightly and heads southeast for about six miles, offering open views of pastureland and distant hills as we approach Alpena.
In Alpena, US-62 merges with U.S. Highway 412, creating a dual-route corridor for the remainder of the drive. Though short, this stretch is one of the smoother segments of the trip. Just a couple miles later, we reach the outskirts of Harrison, where AR-392 intersects the highway just north of town. We end our journey here, turning off the highway as the route continues into Harrison—a larger community with plenty of services, restaurants, and access to the Buffalo National River area just to the south.
This drive is a classic example of Arkansas’s diverse terrain—twisting mountain roads, wide valleys, and charming towns all packed into a relatively short route. Whether you’re heading to Harrison for a weekend float trip, or coming from Eureka Springs after a day of sightseeing and shopping, US-62 offers a memorable ride through the heart of the Ozarks.
